Another Monday - and so begins the fourth week of my internship.
Another intern was starting today. Which neither me or Laura knew about. We actually arrived at the office at the same time and Christine was standing at reception with this girl who she introduced as the new intern starting today. Say what?
So I guess we're now a little trio of interns. Her name is Altivenea?.... I 100% do not remember how to spell her full name or how it's even pronounced. She told us to call her Alia for short. She has an adorable accent though. She's from Russian originally but she's lived in New York for the past 8 years. She's going to school here right now and she has a year and a half left still.
Laura started discussing the basics at the front desk while I took care of the emails that came in over the weekend. Then Laura took her on a quick tour while I ran the front. A little while later after Christine came back to talk to us, we decided that every other day me and Laura will switch off sitting in the front while the other takes one of the empty desks in the library. At least until Alia is comfortable at the front on her own. We absolutely do not have room for three interns at the front. Plus it's just silly. So I volunteered to take the first duty today - and Laura sat in the library to work on some things for Rose.
Luckily I had some things come up to mail so I was able to show Alia how to create labels and mail off packages. And a couple clients came in asking for people which was also good because it really helps to see how you handle those kind of situations when you're knew. She had lots of questions about the phones as well and fortunately enough it rang quite a few times this morning.
Ceci emailed us at one point asking if one of us (Laura or myself) could run down to the Holland & Sherry showroom to pick up these 4 huge baskets. Of course we could. We love making trips out. Neither one of us volunteered yet though - the showroom didn't open till 12 and we weren't sure who would be busiest at that time.
And then a little while later, Elisabeth, one of our senior design associates, asked me if one of us could run to a local hardware store to pick up 5 hard hats and 5 pairs of safety glasses. Super random right? She said it was for the Waldorf project. I know that the Waldorf hotel is in the process of being torn up right now because we're renovating it. So I'm assuming 5 people are making a site visit tomorrow. There's really no other explanation for needing those things. Ha.
I informed Laura about the new trip and told her we'd need to coordinate the trips so someone will always be at the desk, while at the same time allowing us to take lunches. Laura took her lunch first while me and Alia were at the front. So I continued to work on that custom rug for Stella. She actually is going to be gone all week, (so lucky...) so Aijun is working with me on it now. And making that darn strie pattern effect thing in photoshop was getting so so tricky. Aijun kept emailing me and asking if it was done yet, and she needs it soon, etc, etc. She was stressing me out! Me and Alia were working on it together and we couldn't get some things right that they needed done on it. Plus I knew that not only did Aijun want it done ASAP, I needed to get it done ASAP because the longer it would take me, the further behind we'd be on eveything else we needed to get done. Errands always take longer than you think and we now had two to do.
ANYWAY. After a stressful hour or two, I emailed it to her. And it wasn't exactly how she wanted it, but I couldn't figure it out and it was taking up too much time. Stupid darn custom rug got the best of me today. At least I got the colors right in it! And the pattern turned out really cool too. Just the stupid strie effect was dumb. I hate their photoshop because its SO OLD. I'm not used to such an old version. Some things are the same, and some things are not. It will take a bit more getting used to. Still, I'm happy that I was able to help create this fantastic custom rug for the St. Regis Hotel in Jakarta Indonesia.
When I finally finished that I rushed off for just a quick bite to eat and when I came back Laura and Alia headed out to get those baskets. When they returned I went to a Home Depot on 23rd street to pick out hard hats and safety glasses. I never would have guessed in a million years that I would be done that on one of my days here. But it went good. Afterall, I am master of the subways and about getting around here now. :)
When I returned it was almost 5. The day went by SO quick today! Ellie came up and asked me to do a bunch of scans when I got back. So me and Alia worked on those until she had to leave at 5:30 and then I finished them off at about 6:15. Busy busy day. And stressful. But I'd rather had than a day that drags on.
And mother and Emily come tomorrow! AND I have Wednesday off! What a great week. :)
